Results of a newly released peer-reviewed study show that cannabis can be an effective sleep aid.

Published this week in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, researchers conclude that using medical cannabis for symptom relief was common among adult-use customers at two Colorado-based dispensaries who took part in an online survey.

Patrons were surveyed about how cannabis affected their sleeps patterns and how it changed their pharmaceutical needs. The review focused solely on recreational consumers, excluding anyone who had a medical licence from the results.

Of the 1,000 adult-use consumers who responded, 74 percent reported using cannabis to promote sleep. Of the participants using cannabis as a sleep aid, 84 percent found it to be very or extremely helpful. And of that group, about eight of 10 reported they were able to reduce or stop use of over-the-counter (OTC) aids.

The study also asked participants about treating pain with cannabis, with promising results. Of the pain group, 80 percent reported that cannabis was very or extremely helpful, and of that group, 82 percent said they were able to reduce or stop OTC pain medications and 88 percent said the same about opioid analgesics.

“A daily user could be a grandmother taking an edible that she believes enhances sleep, or a construction worker suffering from back pain at the end time of the day,” study co-author Dr. Gwen Wurm, an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of Miami, told Inverse.

Here at home, 40 percent of Canadian respondents report some sort of insomnia. Other studies have demonstrated that THC is an effective sedative, and there are some preliminary findings that CBD can improve sleep cycles.
